Superconductivity and Vortices
Welcome Research People Publications Levitation Demo Vacancies Links

Our group is dedicated to the fascinating physics of unusual and/or unconventional superconductors, with a strong emphasis on understanding the fundamental properties of such materials.

We focus on experimental studies of vortices, and how they can be used to probe the detailed nature of the superconducting state of the host material.

Latest News & Events
Grace Longbons was elected to the Executive Committee of the Oak Ridge SNS and HFIR User Group (SHUG). SHUG works with the ORNL Neutron Sciences Directorate to address user concerns, provides a forum for keeping the entire community informed of issues and progress, and serves as an advocacy group for neutron scattering science.

Results of molecular dynamics simulations of driven metastable vortex lattices in superconductors with a combined six- and twelvefold anisotropic interactions were published in the New Journal of Physics. The MD simulations were performed by Dany Minogue and the work was done in collaboration with Drs. Cynthia and Charles Reichhardt at Los Alamos Natl. Lab.
November 30, 2023
Danny Minogue graduated with a B.S. in Physics and B. E. in Computer Science, and Ted Roe graduated with a B.S. in Physics and a B.S. in Mathematics. Congratulations and best wishes for your future careers!
May 20, 2023
Tony Francisco successfully defended his thesis on molecular quantum simulators of non-Kekulé molecules. Congratulations Dr. Francisco!
April 25, 2023
Nathan Chalus passed his oral candidacy exam with a proposal to study skyrmion dynamic under the influence of radial electric and thermal currents. Congratulations!
March 21, 2023
Grace Longbons passed her oral candidacy exam with a proposal to perform spatially resolved SANS studies of vortex and skyrmion lattices. Congratulations!
February 28, 2023
Nolan Powers has joined the group and will help with sample preparation and characterization for our SANS experiments. Welcome!

Results of molecular dynamics simulations of driven vortices in superconductors with a two-fold anisotropy in the vortex-vortex interaction was published in the New Journal of Physics. The MD simulations were performed by Ted Roe and the work was done in collaboration with Drs. Cynthia and Charles Reichhardt at Los Alamos Natl. Lab.

Our studies of the effects of carbon and manganese doping on the two-gap superconducting state in MgB2 through studies of the vortex lattice were published in the Journal of Applied Crystallography. This work was carried out in collaboration with Soham Manni and the Canfield group at Iowa State University/Ames Laboratory.

Morten Eskildsen will give an invited talk on our SANS studies of skyrmions under the influence of radial currents at the 2022 American Conference on Neutron Scattering (ACNS2022) in Boulder (CO).
June 5-9, 2022
Our SANS studies how the VL in UPt3 undergoes a disordering due to neutron beam induced fission in the sample were published in Phys. Rev. B. The disordering is reversible and a well-ordered VL can be achieved by a vortex "shaking" process.
May 17, 2022
Further results of our SANS studies of UPt3 were published in Front. Electron. Mater. in special research topic on "New Heavy fermion Superconductors". Here we mapped the vortex lattice phase diagram in the B phase as a function of field and temperature, demonstrating the influence of the symmetry breaking field.
April 7, 2022
Morten Eskildsen will present the results of our SANS studies to probe the superconducting state of UPt3 at a colloquium at Temple University.
April 4, 2022
All members of the Eskildsen group (Tony, Grace, Nathan, Dan, Ted and Morten) will present a talks at the 2022 APS March meeting in Chicago (IL).
March 14 - 18, 2022
Our tired and trusted Solis Mater 5000 finally retired after 19 years of faithful service. They was replaced by Gaggia Classic who will hopefully have an equally long and successful tenure in our group.
December, 2021
In this video our collaborator Jon White discusses the merits of the Paul Scherrer Institute SANS-I instrument for studies of vortices and skyrmions. The video features an appearance by our very own Allan Leishman at the 1:35 mark.
