OBJECTIVE |

Dedicated to the purpose
of maintaining and promoting the status of civil
engineering as an ideal profession, Chi Epsilon
was organized to recognize the characteristics
of the individual civil engineer deemed to be
fundamental to the successful pursuit of an
engineering career, and to aid in the
development of those characteristics in the
civil engineering student...

Chi Epsilon
is
the official Honor Society for Civil Engineers, with a proud tradition
of community service, academic enrichment and social camaraderie. The
Notre Dame student chapter was established
in 1966 as the 62nd Chapter and is a member
of the Great Lakes District. |

ND Chi Epsilon Member Ahsan
Kareem Inducted to National
Academy of Engineering

Ahsan Kareem, Robert Moran
Professor of Civil
Engineering and Geological
Sciences at the University
of Notre Dame, was elected
to the National Academy of
Engineering (NAE) in
February of 2009. According
to the NAE, he was given
this distinguished honor
“for [his] contributions to
analyses and designs to
account for wind effects on
tall buildings, long-span
bridges, and other
structures.” He is
currently the director of
Notre Dame’s NatHaz Modeling
Laboratory. Kareem is also
the primary U.S. contributor
to “New Frontiers of
Education and Research in
Wind Engineering,” a project
at Tokyo Polytechnic
University’s Global Center
for Excellence.
Kareem received a B.S. in
Civil Engineering from the
West Pakistan University of
Engineering and Technology
in 1968, a M.S. in Civil
Engineering from the
University of Hawaii through
a joint program with MIT in
1975, and a Ph.D. in Civil
Engineering with a focus on
structural dynamics and
fluid dynamics from Colorado
State University in 1978.
Many awards have been
bestowed on Kareem including
the Alan G. Davenport Medal,
the Robert H. Scanlan Medal
and the Jack E. Cermak
Medal. These medals
recognize his contributions
to the study of wind effects
on structures.
Ahsan Kareem was inducted
into Chi Epsilon through the
University of Notre Dame in
February of 2007.

Great Lakes Regional Conference,
with a number of Chi Epsilon members
participating.

May 2009:
Tau Beta Pi finishes honor society
garden in collaboration with Chi
Epsilon and other ND discipline
honor societies.
