Santiago Schnell

Santiago Schnell was appointed the William K. Warren Foundation Dean of the College of Science in 2021. Previously, he led the University of Michigan Medical School’s Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology, which under his leadership became the National Institutes of Health's top-funded department in the nation.

In a previous position, he was the basic science director for the medical school’s Office for Health Equity and Inclusion, where he guided the development and implementation of the strategic plan for 10 departments.

Schnell is the recipient of the Arthur T. Winfree Prize for his seminal work on enzyme kinetics via the Schnell-Mendoza equation, and is a fellow of The Royal Society of Biology, The Royal Society of Chemistry, The Royal Society of Medicine and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Schnell received his undergraduate degree in biology from Universidad Simón Bolívar in Venezuela and earned his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
