CHAPEL HILL, N.C.
Freshman forward Cindy Parlow scored two goals and one assist to lead number one ranked and undefeated North Carolina to a 4-0 win over Vanderbilt in the second round of the 1995 NCAA Division Women's Soccer Tournament Saturday night before a crowd of 3,870 at Fetzer Field. Parlow, the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, opened the scoring just 9:25 into the game and added a second goal 28 seconds into the second half. Parlow then assisted on Meg Uritus's goal at 57:31 which gave the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead. Carolina, now 24-0, advances to the national quarterfinals for the 15th consecutive year. The Tar Heels have won nine straight NCAA titles and 13 national crowns in the last 14 years. The win Saturday was the 30th consecutive NCAA Tournament victory for UNC and improved Carolina's NCAA record to 41-1. The Tar Heels will play Santa Clara, which defeated Virginia, 1-0 Saturday night in Charlottesville, Va. UNC beat the Broncos, 2-0, earlier this year. The UNC-Santa Clara game will be played on Saturday, November 25, at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. Parlow gave Carolina a 1-0 at the 9:25 mark as she took a pass from Debbie Keller and beat Vanderbilt goalie Christy Barringer from 15 yards out. The lead stayed at 1-0 through intermission, despite Carolina having an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Beth Sheppard set up the second UNC goal with a crossing pass which Parlow headed into the goal. It was her 19th score of the season. Uritus scored at 57:31 off a Robin Confer corner kick which Parlow flicked backward with her head. Sophomore defender Staci Wilson added the final goal at 60:42 on a direct kick from 20 yards. Carolina outshot the Commodores, 21-2. Barringer mad 10 saves, while UNC goalie Tracy Noonan did not record a save. Vanderbilt ends its season with a 14-7 record.
