The opening round match up between William & Mary and NC State
was not only a battle between those two teams but it was also a
battle between those teams and Mother Nature. The weather for the
game was rainy with winds gusting up to 40 miles an hour. The two
teams tallied 58 fouls including an ncaa tournament record 37 by
NC State. The previous record of 36 was set by California in 1984
in a game the Bears lost to Carolina (UNC). [Source: Sunday sports

These are two good sides, but conditions really affected the
play and required both teams to adjust their game as best they
could to adapt to the situation. North Carolina State was able to
adapt just a bit better, and finally scored on one long range shot.
