Referring to the Counseling Center
Summarize your concerns, indicate you are referring them to UCC and why
Normalize and Reassure: Review confidentiality and limits, getting help doesn’t mean weakness, getting help now will avoid bigger problems later.
Structure the Referral: Give info about the Center, intake process and emergency services. Have the student call UCC from your room, go with him/her to appointment.
If the student chooses not to make an appt. consult with Rector and/or UCC
Notes:
Discuss confidentiality and limits (danger to self or others). Confidentiality is important not only for treatment but also required by law. If you want to know if the student followed through, ask student to sign a release of information form.
Discuss intake and on-call procedures.
Walk-in: Monday - Friday 9:00-5:00. Call UCC to tell us you are referring the student and why you are referring. Let us know when the student is coming in. Come with the student if possible.
