Notes:
- Every year, 100,000 young people in the U.S., between the ages of 15 and 24 attempt suicide; over 5,000 actually succeed. Of these, 1,000 are college students.
- Statistics show that the greatest increase in suicide attempts in recent years has been in this young adult age group.
- Approximately 3 times as many females as males made attempts at suicide, but more males succeed. This trend seems to be changing; more females are completing their suicide attempts than in the past.
- At institutions where academic pressure and competition for grades is rigorous, there is increased potential for suicide.
- One out of four students who come to the Notre Dame Counseling Center report suicidal thoughts at the intake session, which is approximately 200 students per year. Of these, about 40 are at high risk for suicide, and about 4-6 are hospitalized each year.
- 8 out of 10 people who commit suicide give overt or covert warnings that they are considering suicide. Pay attention to these warning signals.
