Writing University Partnerships
Writing UP is a campus-community partnership workshop designed to help high school students develop advanced writing skills. Each participating student will produce a polished piece of writing that engages with a local issue of civic import and will have the opportunity to publish that piece in the Op-Ed section of the South Bend Tribune. We hope that these high school students will learn to see themselves as participating citizens in a democracy, using what they write as tools for engaging others about public issues that affect their quality of life, e.g. housing, jobs, poverty, air quality, and daycare, as well as sharing experiences with a range of people in their community.
All we require is that you be a South Bend high school student and that you be interested in publishing and improving your writing. We are enrolling new students all year, so you can begin at any time.
Program goals:
- Work with each student to publish at least one editorial in the South Bend Tribune Op-Ed pages.
- Give students a chance to use writing to communicate with a real audience on an issue of civic or personal importance to them.
- Introduce students to writing as a process, and help them improve their skills.
What we do:
- Work with students to conceive, draft, revise, and polish an editorial with the help of a Notre Dame Writing Center tutor.
- Set up weekly one-on-one meetings with Notre Dame writing tutors in the Writing Center on campus to help them with their project and general writing skills. Each submission will require 3 to 4 meetings, and students are encouraged to submit more than one editorial throughout the year.
- Meet with all participants at the end of the month to peer edit and discuss progress, problems, and ideas for new editorials.
- Offer a chance to compete for a $1000 scholarship for a piece chosen by Writing UP staff at the end of the year.
For all questions and concerns, please contact Craig Brewer at 631-5427 or send email to cbrewer@nd.edu.
