The American Weil Society
PURPOSE:
The purpose of the American Weil Society is to promote scholarly
discussion of the thought of Simone Weil, issues important for understanding
her thought and issues on which her thought bears, and to promote interest
in her thought. It also seeks to provide an organization by which those
interested in Simone Weil may have access to each other and each other's
work. The Society is a member of the Conference of Philosophical Societies
and its annual meetings are listed in the conference calendar of that
organization.
MEMBERSHIP:
The American Weil Society is the American branch of l'Association
pour l'étude de la pensée de Simone Weil. Membership fees
include membership
in both organizations.
While the Society functions as a scholarly society, membership is
open and welcomes any who are interested and their contributions. Members
include philosophers, theologians, literary scholars and French scholars,
as
well as numerous people in various other professions such as ministers,
priests and social services people.
ACTIVITIES:
Through the Society members may subscribe to the quarterly Cahiers
Simone Weil, which is published by the French Association. While primarily
in French, the journal usually publishes one article per issue in English.
Subscriptions are optional, and, like membership fees, run strictly on
a
calendar year basis.
The Society also organizes an annual colloquy and has been meeting
annually since 1981. This two day colloquy, usually the last weekend in
April, is dedicated to the presentation of papers and discussion, and
usually centers around a set theme or text, although all timely papers
are
welcome. The site for the meeting varies, and has included in the past,
Princeton, Cambridge, Toronto, Santa Fe, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The
papers from these colloquies are usually made available to interested
members at a nominal cost.
In addition, the Society publishes an occasional newsletter, noting
recent publications ( and often offering discounts on books), relevant
news,
and occasional book reviews. Through the office of the president a
bibliography of works on Weil in English is also maintained.
