UNDERC-West encompasses more than a million acres in western and central Montana surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. The region contains valley grasslands, montane forests, alpine meadows, as well as numerous streams and lakes with their associated riparian habitats. Wildlife is abundant including bison, elk, mountain lion, and grizzly bear, especially on the National Bison Range (USFWS). Much of this land is administered by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, who are partners in this program with the University of Notre Dame.
