Queen City Tune Up

In their first tournament with its full roster, the Notre Dame Ultimate Men's A-Team had a disappointing weekend at the Queen City Tune-Up in Charlotte, North Carolina. Despite the return of Thom Kenealy and Will Cernanec from study abroad programs, the team finished 1-5 on the weekend with losses to Wake Forest, Ohio, Georgia, Michigan State, and NC State. The lone win came against East Carolina. Troubled by Wake Forest and Ohio's zone defenses, ND started slowly falling behind 7-0 to both teams. Led by captains Justin Browne and Mike Della Penna, the team staged a furious comeback, but it eventually fell short, with Notre Dame losing 14-13. Against Ohio, although playing better in the second half, the first half deficit was too great to overcome. In the next game against perennial National's contender Georgia, ND finally turned in a strong first half, trading points with the Dawgs for much of the first half. The Bulldogs took control in the second half, however, winning 14-8. Finally, against East Carolina, Notre Dame put a complete game together, beating the Irates 14-7 without surrendering a break on offense. Freshman Connor Haney played shut-down defense and cut well on offense in his first experience of college ultimate. James Denue added experience on offense, and Zack Woodruff made big plays on both sides of the disc. On Sunday, a visibly tired Notre Dame struggled to keep up with Michigan State on defense. The loss to MSU was followed by another defeat at the hands of NC State. A bright spot came in the form of new look sophomore Jonathon Koch, whose constant bids kept the team energized throughout the day. Notre Dame will look to rebound at the Midwest Throwdown in St. Louis, Missouri on March 5 and 6.
