Note: The following article was initially presented as a lecture at the international converence, "Cultural and Historical Geographies of the Arboretum," held at the Linnaean Society of London, September 6-8, 2006. It was subsequently published in a special issue of Garden History (35: Suppl. 2. 2007), pp. 196-216. Here it is posted with the permission and courtesy of Dr. Barbara Simms, Editor, Garden History and Paul Elliott, Charles Watkins and Stephen Daniels, guest editors of the special issue of Garden History cited above.
