VII. CURRENT RESEARCH  Chemical processes, environment, and dynamical evolution of the early solar system, comets, and preplanetary disks around young stars.

1.  Understanding the Process of Disk and Planet Formation Around Young Stars.
Planet formation has been known for many years to be tied to the accretion and evolution of gas and dust in disks around young HAeBe and T Tauri stars. This early stage of stellar evolution occurs after the shell around an embedded protostar collapses to form a preplanetary disk, revealing a pre-main-sequence star representative of the Sun when our solar system was forming.  This research program uses high-resolution spectra of ices, dust, and gas phase molecules in the disks of these pre-main sequence stars to study the physical conditions in the planet forming regions. Specifically, infrared observations of gas phase molecules such as CO, H2, H3+, and H2O can be used to understand the chemical processes, environment, and dynamical evolution of ‘other solar systems’ that may be in the process of planet formation.  The abundance and excitation of these molecules can be used to clarify the time scales and initial conditions for planet building and may also provide a new technique to find protoplanets.  Infrared spectroscopic data are obtained from the Infrared Telescope (IRTF) and the 10 meter Keck Telescope on Mauna Kea.

2.  The discovery of the Kuiper belt objects beyond the orbit of Neptune has initiated a revolution in our understanding of the architecture of the outer solar system.  Due to their recent discovery and their intrinsic faintness, little work has been done to explore the physical and chemical properties of these worlds.  Using the Vatican Advanced  Technology telescope (VATT), a broad band color survey of a number of the known objects is in progress to search for rotational light curves.

3.  OLD - We continue to analyze (current NASA Grant) Hubble Space Telescope (WFPC-2) images of the fragmented comet Shoemaker--Levy 9 (SL9).  The primary questions remain: how were the fragments formed and what was their central structure?  There still remains a diversity of opinion regarding the structure of the  21  comet-like fragments as well as the specifics of the disruption event itself.  We have shown from Monte Carlo modeling of surface brightness profiles that SL9 fragments had unusual dust size distributions and outflow velocities.  Further work showed some of the central reflecting area excesses derived from surface brightness profile fitting (w/psf) appeared distributed rather than centrally concentrated as would be expected for comet-like objects,. We continue to model the SL9 images (w/Derek Richardson, U. Maryland) to understand the behavior and characteristics of the central excesses as the fragments approached Jupiter and use numerical techniques to investigate the various fragment models.  The results may provide evidence to discriminate between the parent nucleus models (i.e., were the fragments solid objects or swarms of particles?).
