Series found only on the dust jacket

Sometimes, the only place the title of a series appears is on the dust jacket. When this happens, and:

A. The series statement is in the authority library.
Put brackets [ ] around the series statement in the 4xx field, to indicate that the series statement does not appear on the piece.

Then add the note:
500__ $a Series statement from jacket.
to the record (if the note is not already there), to explain why the series is in brackets.

Examples:

490 0_ $a [Essential poets] ; |$ v. 3
500 __ $a Series statement from jacket.

440 _0 $a [Advances in discourse processes] ; $v no. 6
500 __ $a Series statement from jacket.

490 1_ $a [Report / Dept. of Natural Resources ; $v 1990/2]
500 __ $a Series statement from jacket.
830 _0 $a Report (Virginia. Dept. of Natural Resources) ; $v 1990/2.

B. The series has not been established in the authority library.

Give the series in a 500 quoted note. Also give the series title in a 740 field,
without the series numbering. Do not send the book out for series establishment.

Example:

500 __ $a "Models in aggressive journalism, 5"-- Jacket.
740 0_ $a Models in aggressive journalism.

NOTE:

1. If the volume number of the series appears in the book, but the title of the series appears only on the dust jacket, consider that the book is in the series appearing on the dust jacket. In this case do not use brackets around the series statement. If the series is not in ALEPH, send the book to the series coordinator in CADM for series establishment.

2. Even though the book may have a 'series preface', or have a list of 'other volumes in the series', if the title of the series appears only on the dust jacket, follow the instructions given above.

If a book has a 'series preface' or a list of 'other volumes in the series' and there is no dust jacket, and no mention of the title of the series anywhere in the book, and the volume number of the series does not appear anywhere in the book, delete any series fields (4XX/8XX), any 500 notes stating that the series statement is from the dust jacket, and any 740 or 246 fields with the title of a series in them.

3. The dust jacket is not the same as the cover. Series appearing on the cover, spine, etc. are treated as any other series in the book.
