Frequently Asked Questions
- 1. When is The Show?
- The Show 2008 will be on Friday, August 29, at 8:00 P.M.
- 2. Where is The Show?
- The Show will be held in the Joyce Center Fieldhouse (the dome facing Rolfs/Hesburgh Library/etc.)
- 3. How much does it cost?
- $10. The best concert you will see all year for that price—guaranteed.
- 4. Isn't The Show the idea of University administrators and staff and they are the ones responsible for the annual concert?
- The Show began as a student idea and remains a completely student-run and organized event. Though The Show would not be possible without the guidance of countless staff and administrators who work with students to make the concert a success, The Show committee makes all major decisions and is ultimately responsible. Applications for the committee are accepted annually and all Notre Dame, Saint Mary's, and Holy Cross undergraduate students are welcome to apply.
- 5. U2 played The Show a few years ago! Why can't we get more bands like that?!
- In October of 2001, U2 opened the third leg of their North American tour at Notre Dame's Joyce Center. This was not at The Show, but a completely separate concert that was organized and made possible by U2 and their concert promoter. Students were not involved in the planning of the event, tickets were much more expensive than $10, and it was open to the public. U2 chose Notre Dame, Notre Dame could not have afforded to choose U2 for The Show.
- 6. What's the best way to meet a super cute girl/guy at The Show?
- Freshmen—DomerFest didn't quite work out the way you planned?
- Upperclassmen—First week back and you suddenly spot the crush from before the summer?
- The Show is the perfect event to meet up at—it's students only, and the music is usually so loud you can't hear each other, so no need to be afraid of embarrassing yourself.
- 7. Notre Dame has a $3 billion endowment—shouldn't we have unlimited money to bring great bands?
- While Notre Dame does boast a sizable endowment, that money is (as one could expect) used to ensure the long-term solvency of the University and towards the academic and educational initiatives that make Notre Dame one of the best schools in the country. The Show would not be possible without the generous funding of Student Affairs, which sets aside funds each year to make the concert a reality. Concerts are fun, but school comes first.
- 8. Bands love Notre Dame! Why don't you just ask them to play for free?!
- While it is true that many people, including rock stars, share a love for Notre Dame, it is also true that these people, including rock stars, have to earn a living. Almost every band featured at The Show in the past has completely enjoyed their experience and remarked how great the school is. This hasn't made them any more willing (or willing at all) to part with their honorarium.
- 9. The Show is open to the public, right?
- Wrong. The Show is designed to bring together the Notre Dame, Saint Mary's, and Holy Cross community in one awesome night of entertainment and energy. It is the largest student event (besides football games—which are open to the public) and is, by design, students only.
- 10. The Show is clearly the coolest event of the year-how can I get involved?
- There may be a limited number of volunteer spots still open for The Show 2008 to sell tickets or work the day of the event. Email dbayona@nd.edu if you're interested for this year, and stay tuned for updates on applying for the committee for next year!
