Getting Started With TeamTrak
Although some setup tasks have already been done for you, the TeamTrak laptop you have received has an out-of-the-box OEM Windows installation. The first task you need to complete is applying any security updates and loading new virus definition files (the one included with Symantec AV is from December 2005).
Once security updates are applied, you can begin downloading and running the TeamTrak software.
To install the driver for the USB Garmin GPS receiver:
1. Go to the TeamTrak start page at http://www.nd.edu/~teamtrak/start
2. Click on the link for the GPS-18 Driver for Windows XP. Files will be extracted to the C:\Garmin\USB_Drivers directory, but this step does not actually install the driver.
3. Connect the USB connector on the Garmin receiver to a USB port on the tablet.
4. The Add New Hardware wizard should start automatically. If it doesn't, go to Control Panel | Add Hardware and manually install the driver you just downloaded. Don't have the wizard search; specify the directory from Step 2. Additional detailed installation instructions can be found in C:\Garmin\USB_Drivers\Install_USB.txt.
Once the driver for the GPS receiver is installed, you can download and run TeamTrak. From the web site, download the application to any convenient location.
That's it. You're now ready to begin.
When running the application, you may want to download a current map of the campus. Under File | Update map is a menu option to do so, but the tablet must first be connected to the internet. The map data may be found in the file ttplaces.txt along with two other files of interest:
ttplaces.txt: The contents of the application's routing table are recorded in this file whenever a routing packet is created.
ttid.txt: Contains the generated TeamTrak id number and the node name.
Some additional information that might be handy:
Setting up an Ad-hoc Network:
1. From Control Panel, click on Network Connections
2. Right click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties
3. Click on the Wireless Networks tab and under Preferred networks select Add...
4. Set SSID to teamtrak, disable Data Encryption, and select This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access points are not used
5. Click OK. A message will pop up warning about disabling encryption. Click Continue Anyway.
6. Click OK.
The teamtrak network should now appear in the list of available wireless networks:
Please note: the default Windows firewall configuration will block traffic on UDP port 10546, used by the TeamTrak protocol. You will need to allow UDP port 10546 as an exception in order to receive packets from other devices.
Changing the Windows Firewall Configuration:
1. Right click on the wireless network icon in the system tray
2. Select Change Windows Firewall settings
3. Uncheck the box next to Don't Allow Exceptions
4. Click the Exceptions tab
5. Select Add Port...
6. Name is teamtrak
7. Port is 10546
8. Select UDP
9. Click OK
10. Click OK
Disabling Active Protection (IBM ThinkPads Only):
The IBM X41 tablet has a preloaded protection system that disables the hard drive if it detects any jostling of the device. If you are using such a machine, you may notice delays in display updates when moving around. To disable active protection, do the following:
1. From the Start Menu, select All Programs | ThinkVantage | Active Protection System (or click on the icon in the system tray)
2. Uncheck the box next to Enable Active Protection System
3. Click OK
If you experience any difficulty setting up or running TeamTrak, please don't hesitate to contact the TA.
Happy TeamTraking!
