Vampires

My mother first taught me to cross-stitch when I was in first grade. This was the beginning of my experience in the realm of creating with fibers, and lead to sewing doll clothes, clothes for myself and others, crochet, and beyond.

My Aunt Paula tried to teach me to crochet when I was about twelve, but I was stubborn — I ended up teaching myself when I was about sixteen. When I was at Siena Heights as an undergraduate, I took several fiber arts courses and learned batik, weaving, silk screen printing, and various ways of dyeing cloth.

During 2000-2001 I completed two baby blankets, two baby buntings, five afghans and a shawl (and a partridge… oh, wait, that's not right) — let's not talk about what I started but have yet to finish. *grin* And I did my first cross-stitch project in years in the spring of 2000: a wedding sampler for my brother and sister-in-law's wedding gift.

The only thing that I completed in 2002 was one afghan, for my nephew who was born in July. Since Mair was born (August '02), I've done little work — go figure! I did start and finish one project in 2003: a beaded purse for a student worker who was getting married in August.

I'm in the process fo breaking this page up into several pages, so be patient with the construction dust, as it were...

other pattern resources
  • Amazon Drygoods – they don't have much of a Web presence (yet), but the information on how to get a catalog through the mail is here. Good resource for a variety of craft and sewing needs.

  • Folkwear Patterns, “Patterns with Timeless Style” – these are fun and offer a fairly good range of cultures. Although the patterns are primarily European and North American, there are some South American, Asian, and Middle Eastern patterns as well. The patterns are not cheap, but those I've used have been easy to work from.

  • See also some links for belly dance patterns below.
