I first encountered the artwork of Maurits Cornelis (M. C.) Escher in Book Title, on my parents' book case. I was fascinated by the patterns and amused by the humor of the optical illusions. My interest in Escher's work has continued to the present, and I wrote the senior paper for my B.A. in Mathematics about the patterns of his tessellations.

For those of you interested in further reading, I suggest (based on my own reading) the following books:

  • M. C. Escher: His Life and Complete Graphic Work, With a Fully Illustrated Catalogue, edited by J. L. Locher (New York: H. N. Abrams, 1982).

  • Escher on Escher: Exploring the Infinite, by M. C. Escher, translated from the Dutch by Karin Ford, with a contribution from J. W. Vermeulen (New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1989).

The first provides biographical information as well as an exhaustive catalog of Escher's work; the second brings together various of Escher's own essays and lecture texts. Both have good selected bibliographies.

Below you will find a selection of my favorite images from Escher's vast portfolio. I have tried to include a variety of styles, from straight illustration to optical illusion or fantasy illustration to tessellations and mathematical patterns.
