Q: Are REU students graduates or undergraduates? Degree or non-degree?
A: REU individuals are about 50% current Notre Dame degree seeking undergraduates and 50% non-Notre Dame non-degree undergraduates during the summer. There are no graduate REU students.
Q: How do I register for an REU course?
A: Current Notre Dame students can register for the course via insideND. Students must visit the department offering the REU course and obtain an override to the “Department Approval Required” restriction prior to registration.
Non-Notre Dame students apply and register online via the traditional non-degree Summer Session application at: http://www.nd.edu/~sumsess/apply_application.html. For detailed instructions on this process for non-Notre Dame students click here.
Q: What information do REU students need to submit?
A: All REU students, regardless of whether they are currently Notre Dame students or non-Notre Dame students, must submit a statement of research to the Summer Session Office regarding: 1) What department they will be working with, 2) what specific professor, and 3) a concise statement of about the nature of their research work. If the student does not submit the statement of research to the Summer Session Office by June 15, 2009, then they will be removed from their REU registered course. Please note some departments submit this for their REU students. Check with your department to find out specific details.
Q: How much does an REU student pay for a Summer Session REU course?
A: Summer REU students are not charged tuition for a REU course.
Q: How does an REU student obtain housing and a meal plan for Summer Session?
A: Housing arrangements are on an individual basis. Please contact the professor you will be working for to see if housing arrangements are included in your work contract. If housing is not being arranged by the hiring professor, information on summer housing and meal plan applications is available on the Summer Session web site (http://www.nd.edu/~sumsess/) under the Cost/Fees link. The department you will be working for may have already made arrangements for your housing; therefore please do not fill out this application for summer housing without first speaking with your hiring professor. For example, Biology and Physics REU students do not fill out the summer housing application. The Biology and Physics departments will send a list to the Housing Office of their REU students.
Q: Are REU students paid for their summer work?
A: Some REU students are paid for summer research work. Students must contact the department they are conducting research in to discuss eligibility for pay.
Q: How many credits do students receive for an REU course?
A: REU courses are typically zero credits.
Q: How does a student obtain a parking pass for the summer?
A: Motor vehicle registration is $42.00 for the Summer Session 2009 semester. To obtain parking privileges, students must register vehicles at the Parking Services Office in the Hammes-Mowbray Building immediately upon arrival at Notre Dame. The Parking Office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students who arrive outside these hours should obtain a pass from the Main Gate or the East Gate, then park in an assigned student lot and register the vehicle at the earliest opportunity. For further information, please contact Parking Services within the Notre Dame Security Police Office website.
