Fourteenth Annual PLS/GP Summer Symposium 2012 (June 3-8, 2012)
Each summer, the Program of Liberal Studies and General Program alumni/ae gather on Notre Dame's campus, eager to engage their teachers, the authors of the Great Books. The theme this year is “Montaigne and the Question of the Self.” Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) is usually considered the first modern essayist (from the French word essayer – to make an attempt). “I am myself the matter of my book,” he writes in “To the Reader,” and indeed in his interrogations of philosophical and religious questions, he is continually interrogating himself as well. Montaigne was influenced by virtually every major current of ancient thought, and he, in turn, had an enormous influence on such writers and thinkers as Shakespeare, Descartes, Pascal, Emerson, and Nietzsche. Thus, the theme of this year’s Summer Symposium provides a center that can reach out in many different directions.

Hospitable Text: New Approaches to Religion and Literature (July 14-16, 2011, London Notre Dame Center, UK)
Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in the relationship between religion and literature, with the broader critical turn to religion in the arts and humanities helping invigorate an interdisciplinary field that has been well served through the work of journals such as Christianity and Literature, Religion and Literature and Literature and Theology. Recognising the importance of talking further about our different approaches to the field, this conference will bring together a wide variety of scholars in order to enable and enrich contemporary explorations of religion and literature.

Contemporary theorists and theologians have paid considerable attention recently to the idea of hospitality, recognising, among other things, the value of actively hosting viewpoints different from our own rather than merely tolerating their presence. With this in mind, the theme of our conference is The Hospitable Text.

13th International Workshop on Vortex Matter in Superconductors (July 31-August 5, 2011, Chicago)
The 13th International Workshop on Vortex Matter in Superconductors is sponsored by Argonne National Laboratory, Ames National Laboratory, The Materials Theory Institute of Argonne and the Institute for Theoretical Sciences of the University of Notre Dame. The Workshop will be held at the Knickerbocker Hotel in downtown Chicago from July 31st (Sunday) to August 5th (Friday), 2011. This Workshop continues the tradition of International Vortex Workshops, which began in 1991. The purpose of the Workshop is to promote international collaboration and exchange of ideas. The year 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of superconductivity. In celebration, we have expanded the topics of the Workshop beyond vortex matter to include the latest frontier research in superconductivity. We also have planned two mini-symposia at the Workshop to honor lifetime achievements. The first will honor John Clem, Vladimir Kogan and E. Helmut Brandt for their seminal work on electromagnetism and vortex matter in superconductors. The second will honor Masashi Tachiki, Lev Bulaevskii and Niels Pedersen for their pioneering work elucidating the Josephson plasma phenomena in layered cuprate superconductors. There will also be a Public Lecture associated with the Workshop to promote superconductivity as an energy carrier. Finally, at the Workshop, we will introduce the first Abrikosov Prize for vortex physics to celebrate a colleague who has made substantial and sustained contributions to the field of vortex physics.
