Brief History of the Summer Session
The summer session was established in 1918 to enable religious
teachers to complete baccalaureate degrees. Graduate courses were
offered from the beginning, however, and eventually the great majority
of summer students
were in the Graduate School, with the summer session constituting an
important part of the University's graduate programs. By 1960, 24
departments offered graduate work in the summer. Recently, although
graduate students are still a substantial segment of the summer student
body, their number in formal
courses has been surpassed by Notre Dame and visiting undergraduates.
Approximately 60% of summer students are completing Notre Dame
baccalaureate and advanced degrees.
