Institute for Educational Initiatives: Strategic Plan
The Center for Research on Educational Opportunity
The Center for Research on Educational Opportunity (CREO), a research and educational program in the Institute for Educational Initiative, conducts basic and applied studies of schools and student learning. The mission of the Center is to increase understanding of how school policies and practices channel learning opportunities to students. CREO faculty and researchers study the formal and informal organization of schools, the curriculum, teacher pedagogy, student social relationships and school context in an effort to determine how these factors affect student cognitive and social development. A particular focus of CREO researchers is the identification of public and private school practices that are beneficial to at-risk students.
CREO seeks to foster the intellectual life of the Institute for Educational Initiatives and the Notre Dame community. To achieve this end, the Center holds an annual conference to report research findings on schools. CREO also sponsors an annual lecture series highlighting contemporary issues in education. In addition, CREO presents workshops and symposia, initiates and coordinates research projects among faculty and sponsors faculty exchanges, postdoctoral fellowships and graduate training.
CREO views the next decade in education as a crossroad at which educators and policymakers will make significant decisions that will affect education for generations. CREO seeks to assist these decision makers in formulating and implementing effective policy and practice by making available a rigorous and systematic body of research on school characteristics and student learning.
