INTRO TOUR
Tour with the TA of AV grounds, bus system, Albright Institute, 'necessity' stops, the Old City.  Group dinner at local restaurant, begin watching "1st 50 years" video. 
5   TRIP/
LECTURE
Morning tour of the École tombs with Prof. Gaby Barkay.  9:00 am start.  Afternoon tour of the remainder of the École grounds.  Intro to area libraries.  Finish video. 
LECTURE
Morning lecture on the History of Israel/Palestine by Prof. Robert Haak and discussion of "1st 50 Years" video.  Afternoon - tour of Islamic, Jewish, and Christian sites in the Old City.

Morning trip to desert laura in Nahal Fawwar.  Called the "Machu Pichu of Palestine", this site clearly illustrates  the laura vs coenobitic life.   Afternoon off.  Evening research time in lab or library. 
LECTURE

Morning lecture on the bones of the cranium.  Afternoon lab on the skull.  Also research time for preparing archaeology site reports. 

10  LECTURE

Lecture and lab on the axial and appendicular skeleton.  Review of bones and major landmarks of the thorax and appendages. 
 
 

 

11  FIELD TRIP

Wadi Kelt hike to St. George's monastery w/Robert Mullins. 5:30 am start, 6 hour trip.   Afternoon free for archaeology site report preparation. 

12  LECTURE
Lecture and lab on forensic techniques of age, sex, and stature determination using fragmentary remains.  Paleopathology overview and methods for differential diagnosis. 
13-14 GALILEE FIELD TRIP 1

Overnight trip.  Travel to the Byzantine monasteries of Euthymius and Gerasimus, lunch in Jericho, afternoon visit to Beit She'an (Byzantine Scythopolis).  Travel to hotel on the Sea of Galilee.  Dinner at Vered HaGalil, evening free.  Morning hike to early homidid caves of Amud, vists to Tabgha, Capernum, Church of the Beatitudes.  Lunch in En Gev, visit to Kursi, return to Jerusalem.

15  LECTURE
Review of the findings associated with the Byzantine St. Stephen's collection to date, including the dietary reconstruction completed with the previous summer field school. 
16  LECTURE
Lecture on childhood health and adaptability.  Assign specific research to be conducted by each student, overview of the techniques, materials available, and comparative resources. 
17  TOUR/
LECTURE
Byzantine Jerusalem archaeology tour w/Prof Jodi Magness.  Morning lecture in Albright Garden, followed by walking tour of the Old City.  Afternoon - library research time.

SEARCH
Research time.  Assignment of research projects.  Day free to find  texts for designing research methodology - libraries of the École, Albright and Hebrew University available. 
19  METHODS

Continuted time to review literature in the laboratory and libraries.  They will design a spreadsheet for data collection, compatible with other data available for the collection.

Byzantine monasticism lecture and tour by Prof. Yizarh Hirschfeld.  Discussion of Judean desert monasticism and visit to a Eudocian site.

Morning trip to the Israel Museum.  Afternoon free for research.  Students will begin a 'dry run' thru their research collection to exercise their data collection skills.

RESEARCH
Morning visit to a Greek Orthodox liturgy to understand an aspect of the cultural context of the Byzantine monastic existence at St. Stephen's.  Afternoon research time. 
25 RESEARCH
Research time.  Students will make corrections to their spreadsheet design based on 'practice run' and begin data collection in earnest. 
26  DATA
COLLECTION
Research time.  Students will be given the day to work with their research collection to gather necessary measurements for analysis. 
27-28 GALILEE FIELD TRIP 2
Optional overnight trip.  Travel north of the Sea of Galilee to Banyais.  Visit to the Byzantine site Susita/Hippos. Drive in Golan Heights along Syrian border.  Hotel in Tiberias.  Morning visit to hominid sites in the Carmel region, the Roman/Byzantine mosaics of Sepphoris, and meet Dr. Jeffrey Blakely at Caesarea for tour.  Return to Jerusalem.

Travel to the Negev to see the Byzantine sites of Shivta, Nizzana, and Avdat.  Lunch at Mitzpah Rimon overlook.  Return via the Dead Sea to view the Wilderness of Zin region.
