  • List of Questions

  • Q1: For the electronics team, what is required in terms of a concept sketch?

Q2: When does a play start?

Q3: What happens if the quarterback knocks the ball away from the center but never actually possessed it? Would it be a live fumble, or did the play never start?

Q4: Does a lineman or any player for that matter have to line up "square" with the line of scrimmage?

Q5: The rules say no part of any extensible arm can be more than 3 inches in diameter wherever it extends beyond the 14 inch square footprint. Does this include the ball grasping system of the QB?

Q6: Can the ball be placed in a box and then arm come across the top of the box, or can the ball be placed in a net?

Q7: In the set up of players before the ball is hiked, is there an order to what team assembles their players first? For instance will the offensive team assemble first and then allow the defense to position based on their formation.

Q8: Does the defensive line have to line up right on the line of scrimmage?

Q9: Do teams G1/B1 and/or G2/B2 need to be certified for CAD/CAM and manual machine tools?

Q10: I am assuming a Four-Bar arm is not allowed because the 3 inch cross section rule. Is that correct? Or is the the 3 inch cross section only of the members and joints not the space between links?

Q11: When a team is reassembling their robots on the line of scrimage between plays, does the team need to be off the field before the designated time (45 seconds?) expires or do the robots just need to be placed within that amount of time?

Q12: Regarding the individual concept memo, I am a little unsure as to what we turn in. I have drawn multiple concepts (they are all rough at this point), and I am just wondering for Tuesday, do you want us to have multiple drawings of one particular concept, or multiple concepts (each with a few drawings)?

Q13: Can nets be used for catching (not for carrying)?

Q14: Is there a time frame for transporting the ball from the receiving system to the carrying system? Can the player move before the ball is completely transferred to the carrying system?

Q15: If the ball, for some reason, never makes it to the carrying system, is it still considered a catch? If not, is there a penalty involved?

Q16: Do you have to write the strengths and weaknesses for each concept in the individual memo?

Q17: Can the ball be carried within the 14" by 14" footprint? Or does it have to be held outside the footprint in order to increase exposure?

Q18: Does the quarterback need to take the ball from the center, or can the center deliver the ball to the quarterback?

Q19: What should the Electronics Design Teams present for their Design Team Concept when our job of interfacing depends on what the other Teams are developing.

Q19: What should the Electronics Design Teams present for their Design Team Concept when our job of interfacing depends on what the other Teams are developing.

Q20: Does a brace for the back of the robot that sits on the ground count as an arm?

Q21: Does a block or immobilizing piece on the end of an arm have to fit within the 3 inch rule? Does it have to count towards the 18" extension requirement?

Q22: If one large block comes down from the front of robot but is attached with two braces, do those braces count as two arms?

Q23: Does a block that comes down from the front of the robot and extensions that slide laterally from inside the block once it is deployed okay or does that count as a sliding joint and not able to be used?

Q24: Can spring loaded mechanisms that must be "cocked" after each play be used?

Q25: Can the robot have more that 2 arms if only 2 at a time extend beyond the 14x14 footprint? Does a devise count as an arm if it doesn't ever extend beyond the 14x14 footprint?

Q26: What are the dimensions of the field? It is listed that the dimensions are those of a collegiate basketball court, but are you sure that the marked courts in Stepan are the same size? The other possibility is taping our own court in Stepan for game time, allowing us to create a court of the correct size.

Q27: Would it be possible to scuff the white panel on the football to give it a more uniform coefficient of friction? Claire and I discussed this and agreed that both squads would like this.

Q28: How long will halftime be? Claire and I agreed to propose a change from 2 minutes (which is published in the 8 on 8 rules) to 10 minutes to allow more time for repair/recharging.

Q29: I would just like to clarify that all players on the field have the option of being recievers in a play. The 8 on 8 rules state this on page 3 under eligible receivers, and I understand that this would mean that the tackle sensors could not be covered.

Q30: Which players and at what time are players allowed to cover their tackle sensors? Gold team believes that any player without the ball can cover them at any time, but you had explained to me that only players that will never be in control of the ball are allowed to.

Q31: Is stiff arming legal? The 8 on 8 rules explicitly call it illegal on page 3.

Q32: How much space is required between the offensive and defensive players on the line of scrimmage at the beginning of the play? The rule about the neutral zone at the bottom of page 3 of the 8 on 8 rules specifies 1 yard, but that needs to be scaled in some way for our gameplay. See Q38, 39 and 40.

Q33: How much time is allotted for a timeout? I rechecked the rules and there is no specified time. The NCAA rule is 30 seconds in addition to the 25 second play clock from when the ball is set, but Claire and I both agreed that an additional minute beyond that would be very beneficial.

Q34: Will the 20 minutes in each half be a running clock? In other words will, the rules be the same as for normal football, the clock runs unless there is a first down, dropped pass, or the robot goes out of bounds?

Q35: How does the stall torque current differ from the peak efficiency current listed at xxx amps (other than in magnitude). Is there not a way to regulate this current, or is that what the speed control does?

Q36: Is the force sensor included in the 14" by 14" footprint of the robot, the rules say "each player must have a tackle force sensor along each side of its 14 inch x 14 inch footprint" does this mean that the chassis can be 14" x 14" with a sensor on each side?

Q37: Can a net that is used for catching be outside the 14" by 14" footprint after the ball is snapped? Or must it be fully contained within the footprint?

Q38: What is the size of the nuetral zone?

Q39: How far back from the line of scrimmage may an offensive lineman back up and still be considered "on the line of scrimmage"?

Q40: How far back from the line of scrimmage may a defensive lineman back up?

Q41: Exactly where does the ball starts with relation to the line of scrimma

Q42: For our Concept Design Proposals, do you want us to go through calculations of all the stresses and margins of safety as we did in our feasibility studies or do we just reference the feasibility studies since they will be included in the Appendix? Also, will our feasibility studies be returned to us before the concept design proposals are turned in so we know if our calculations are correct or should we just use what we turned in to you?

Q43:Question: For the "Layout of Mechanical Components" deliverable due next week, does the ABC team need to have all of our components laid out for you? Or, can we have all the components necessary to make only one of each of the different types of robots we are building? Also, by building only one of the entire set, it gives us a chance to correct for any possible errors before going on to make the others.
