Spring 2005 Assignments

Andrea Hanson: Provide a 1-page biography plus a list of works that include horn as a solo instrument or in a chamber setting (that is, DO NOT include purely orchestral works, but DO include chamber works like a trio for horn, tuba, and piano) for each of the following 3 American composers: Douglas Hill, Verne Reynolds, and Alec Wilder.

Shelly Heger: Describe the manufacturing process for modern horns, including selection and composition of the various metals involved. Consider the differences between hand-made and machine-manufactured instruments. You might find contacting the Conn-UMI plant in Elkhart, Indiana to be informative.

Colleen Key: Create a side-by-side timeline of the history of the horn and flute. Include names of people, places, etc. where appropriate. Important topics to include would be 1) date the instrument was first used in the orchestra, 2) dates of major manufacturing innovations (for horn, this would include development of crooks, valves, double horn, and triple horn; for flute, you'll devise a similar list), 3) dates of major repertoire (for horn, I will provide you a list; for flute, you'll devise a similar list). The list of resources in the back of my little book would be a great place to start.

Fall 2003 Assignments

Watch this space for a list of possible written assignments. I am adapting the written assignments to be shorter this semester. It is my hope that you will each be able to do two or three short (1-2 page) written assignments over the course of the semester instead of one larger assignment. We will discuss customized written assignments in each of your lessons.
