Welcome to the SPANIDS web page at the University of Notre Dame Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The SPANIDS project is developing a scalable architecture for real-time intrusion detection on high-speed networks. We are developing techniques that exploit concurrency in network traffic to distribute high-bandwidth network streams across several sensors to significantly improve the capabilities of existing NIDS systems. We are currently in the process of designing and implementing a prototype system built from off-the-shelf hardware and open source software that will demonstrate the scalability and flexibility of our approach. 5/19/2005: The SPANIDS prototype system is operational. The prototype consists of a custum FPGA board implementing the load balancer and 16 dual-processor Opteron nodes running Snort. Pictures of the system are available here. We are currently in the process of testing and characterizing the system. |
