III.  Course Rationale, Description, and Requirements

New seminar proposals are reviewed in light of the complete constellation of service and community-based learning opportunities in the Center for Social Concerns and across campus.  What prompts you to offer this course at this time?  In what ways might your course connect with or overlap other offerings on campus?  Does it fill a gap or extend a sequence of courses on a particular issue?

Courses with the CSC designation share two essential criteria: 1) they connect students with communities outside the campus through experiential learning, service-learning, community-based learning, and/or community-based research, and 2) they connect students with the principles of social justice articulated in Catholic Social Teaching (CST description) either explicitly or implicitly.  How does your course fulfill these criteria?

Social Concerns Seminars take on a variety of forms and objects of study.  Describe your course.  Include your learning objectives, pedagogical methods, and plans for assessment.  Please include or attach an outline or complete syllabus.

If you intend to include other faculty, staff, or community members in any way (e.g. lecturers, site partner hosts, etc.), please name them here and clarify their awareness and level of commitment to this project.

In this section, describe what you and/or your students would need to complete this course successfully.  Describe budgetary needs (e.g. instructor/guest stipends, course fee, travel costs, materials costs, etc.), support staff needs, classroom or office space, etc.
