Jackie Welsh, curator of education for public programs at the University of Notre Dame's Snite Museum of Art, has received the Museum Art Educator Award from the Art Education Association of Indiana (AEAI).

She will be honored at the organization's annual fall conference Nov. 4 in Indianapolis.

A member of the Snite Museum staff since 2001, Welsh oversees the museum's outreach to local schools, facilitates educational programs, and provides consultation to area teachers and art volunteers on ways to bring the visual arts into the classroom curriculum. She also organizes events, workshops and programs for community groups and coordinates an after-school program at the University's Robinson Community Learning Center in South Bend.

The AEAI is the professional organization dedicated to promotion, advancement and improvement of art education at all levels in the state of Indiana. Its purposes are to increase public awareness, develop strategies for statewide advocacy, inform members on current issues and political action, recognize outstanding performance and programs statewide, and assist the state Department of Education in development and implementation of curriculum materials.

Each year the education department sponsors a number of activities geared especially for teachers including:

Docent Program
The Docent Program consists of community volunteers who guide the tours at the museum.

Docents are volunteers specially trained to lead tours of the galleries for groups of visitors. Although most of the new docents have an education background, it is not a prerequisite; but a love of learning about and sharing an interest in art is common to all. Most tours are given to young visitors touring with their classes from local schools.

Several of our veteran docents have been active for two decades; their exemplary skill and dedication qualify them for role model status.

The Snite’s docent program was greatly enhanced this spring by the addition of eight new members who have completed their training.

They are: Suzanne Cole, Mauro Fonacier, Barbara Obenchain, Phoebe Lykowski, Jan Gardner Moore, Gary Tutorow. Peggy Vaughn, and Carole Walton.

Congratulations to all!

The next two-year training class, which meets weekly for eight months, will begin in the fall of 2007.

Public Outreach Programs
The museum offers area community groups the opportunity to add a visit to the Snite Museum of Art, as a highlight of your art program or as an exciting benefit for your organization's membership. After school art clubs, Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups, Women's Clubs, and foreign country student groups are a few groups who have enjoyed a tour this year. Listed here are specific events, workshops, and programs the Education Department is currently working on.

Teacher Programs

These programs are open to teachers of all disciplines free of charge.
