The Finance Division provides participants ample opportunities to apply financial theory with first hand, real world applications. Through project participation and dialogues with industry experts, members expand their financial lexicon, foster meaningful contacts, and develop essential business skills and professional etiquette from which to build a career.

Spring 2009 Projects

 

LBO - GTCR

Meeting Times: Mondays. Team One: 6:00pm and Team Two: 6:30pm

Location: Mendoza 159

Description: Participants with act as analysts in a private equity fund seeking to perform a heavily debt-financed buyout of a private company. Teams will first examine companies, trends, and characteristics in the home health industry, and choose a target buyout company. The target company will be valued using discounted cash flow modeling, precedent transactions, and comparable company trading multiples. The semester will conclude with a presentation at GTCR's Chicago office.

Restructuring - Houlihan Lokey Howard and Zukin

Meeting Time: 7:30 pm Monday in Mendoza 159

Description: The Restructuring project is an in-depth case study and analysis sponsored by Houlihan Lokey Howard and Zukin. The project will look at ways to appease all stakeholders in a failing company, and continue the operations of the firm at the same time. HLHZ has spun this project off from a case study they constructed for MBA students. The finale of the project will be a presentation to HLHZ at their Chicago office in December. It is highly recommended for finance majors who want to learn much more about a highly respected firm in a highly valuable area of finance.

IPO - Credit Suisse

Meeting Time: 7pm Monday in Mendoza 159

Description: Participants will act as investment banking analysts seeking to take a company public. The target company for this semester is K12, an educational technology company. Participants will construct a pitchbook describing investment highlights, risk factors, and valuation. Valutation will include discounted cash flow and multiples analysis.

Corporate Strategic Advisory - Goldman Sachs

Leaders: Chi-Dao Phan, cphan@nd.edu and ssantrac@nd.edu

Meeting Time: 8:30pm Monday in Mendoza 159

Description: The Corporate Strategic Advisory Project is sponsored by Goldman Sachs and is intended to provide students with a birds-eye view of main investment banking product offerings. Participants will utilize the knowledge they have learned over diligent research and educational conference calls, then explore different strategic options to unlock value from an undervalued company. Strategic alternatives include leveraged finance, merger and acquisition, and structured finance and securitization. The project will culminate will a trip to New York to present to Goldman Sachs professionals explaining the teams findings and recommended path. Applications are required, as there are a limited number of competitive spots available.

Equity Analysis - Morningstar

Meeting Time: 5:30pm Monday in Mendoza 159

Description: Partnering with Morningstar, a market leader in investment research, this project takes students through valuation methods in determining buy, sell, or hold guidance on a stock. The project will culminate in a presentation to Morningstar in their Chicago office.

Buy Side - M&T Trust

Leader: Christopher Phillips, cphilli7@nd.edu

Meeting Time: 8pm Monday in Mendoza 159

Description: The Buy Side project, sponsored by M&T Trust, entails a comprehensive buy side analysis of four equities within a given sector. Stocks are evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively in order to develop assumptions for various valuation models. The stocks are rated on both an absolute and relative basis with a buy, sell, or hold guidance along with a price target being placed on each company. The project culminates with a presentation to our benefactor Frank Potenziani and his firm. The Notre Dame Buy Side team will prepsent alongside SIBC teams from Benedictine College and the University of San Diego.
