Recycling Off Campus
CALL TO BEGIN SERVICE: 299-0500
BASIC INFORMATION:
In the past year, St. Joseph County passed an ordinance to make curbside recycling programs mandatory. The St. Joseph County Solid Waste Management District contracted Superior Waste Systems, Inc. to operate the program, and as a result, all off-campus housing has the opportunity to recycle. Every landowner is charged the minimal fee of less than $3.00 per month regardless of whether they recycle or not. As a result, tenants simply have to check with their landlords before contacting the recycling center and signing up for service.
The recycling trucks pick up recyclable materials every other week, either on Tuesday or Wednesday. Upon request for a recycling bin, the household will receive a schedule of the pick-up dates. There is only one separation of the materials that must be made by the household. Paper goods must be separated from the plastic, glass, aluminum, and steel products. This separation maximizes the collection efficiency. When the materials are collected, they are taken to the South Bend Waste Paper facility on Franklin St. and Indiana Ave. in South Bend. The products are eventually sorted and then shipped to Resource Management, Inc. in Naperville, IL, where they are put up for sale to manufacturers on the open market.
Household hazardous wastes, such as engine oil, paints and solvents, pesticides, poisons, tires, aerosols, batteries, medications, bleaches, and other miscellaneous fluids can be recycled at the Solid Waste District. This is located on 1105 East 5th Street in Mishawaka.
