After the disaster of the nuclear power plant at Chernobyl, the German government has built up a nationwide monitoring system in order to detect incidents releasing radioactivity in an early stage. These incidents can be caused by an event at a nuclear power plant, the explosion of dirty bombs or the release of radioactivity due to illegal disposal of radioactive sources. My group at the Universitaet des Saarland’s is part of the nationwide radiation monitoring system IMIS and serves together with the Clinic of Nuclear Medicine as regional Center for Radio Protection. During the seminar, I will address the possible field for a job of a nuclear physicist. Furthermore environmental aspects of the use of nuclear power will be discussed.
