Undergraduate Program:

The physics curriculum at Notre Dame consists of five course sequences or programs. These programs are designed to accommodate the academic and professional interests of the majority of physics majors. Students with alternate interests are encouraged to discuss special programs with the departmental chair. More information about PHYS-MAJOR program can be found here.

Graduate Program:

The graduate program in physics is a combination of coursework and research designed to prepare the student for a career in teaching, research, and industry. The graduate curriculum includes a rigorous core sequence of courses covering mathematical physics, theoretical mechanics, advanced quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and statistical mechanics, as well as a selection from elective courses covering the research areas in the department. Students are encouraged to become actively involved in this research during their first year. The large number of active personnel, including the regular faculty and a variable number of adjunct professors, postdoctoral associates, and distinguished visiting scholars, combined with a heavy weekly schedule of seminars and departmental colloquia, provide a stimulating environment for graduate work. Excellent facilities are available on campus for most of these areas, but the department also profits from many collaborative efforts with other universities and national laboratories, both in the United States and abroad. The graduate student to faculty ratio is 2.4 : 1.

Quarknet:

Quarknet HeaderQuarkNet is a teacher professional development effort funded by the National Science Foundation and the US Department of Energy. Teachers work on particle physics experiments during a summer and join a cadre of scientists and teachers working to introduce some aspects of their research into their classrooms. This allows tomorrow's particle physicists to peek over the shoulder of today's experimenters. Our department is actively involved in this project. Read more about it here.
