Research Interests

Prof. Marshalek’s general area of research is nuclear-structure theory. He has been particularly interested in the interplay between single-particle and collective effects, which are complementary aspects of the low-energy behavior of atomic nuclei. Through the years, his research has been concerned with the microscopic elucidation of this interplay. Numerous fascinating phenomena have been uncovered in nuclei that make the subject contiguous with other fields; for example, symmetry breaking (deformations, superfluidity) and existence of various collective modes (surface vibrations, giant multipole resonances, rotational bands, etc.). In recent years, he has been working on theories of states of very high quantized angular momentum excited in heavy-ion collisions, and also on theories of large-amplitude collective vibrations, in which non-linear effects are very important. At present, Prof. Marshalek is focusing on rotational bifurcations, tilted rotation and the relation with multiphonon vibrational states.
