Italian
Undergraduate Studies
The Italian Program at Notre
Dame currently enjoys the participation of over three hundred
undergraduates per semester as well as consistent growth in enrollments
from year to year. Students choose courses ranging from
the beginning-intermediate language sequence and advanced language/cultural
studies to a variety of courses on literature, history, art, architecture
and film at various levels in the target language. In addition,
many students from other disciplines participate in Italian Studies
through our courses offered in translation. Dante I,
Dante II, Comedy Italian Style!, Rome:
A Journey in Art and History are examples some very
popular courses taught in English.
After
completing the basic language sequence, students who enjoy Italian
Studies have the choice of pursuing a minor, supplementary major,
first major or honors major (by invitation only). Students
are also encouraged to complement their experiences on campus
at Notre Dame with Study Abroad opportunities, Summer Study, and
a long list of extracurriculur cultural activities which are updated
and publicized here on the web and in our classes. To learn

The
Italian Tradition at Notre Dame
Professor
Paul Bosco began teaching Italian at Notre Dame in 1947. He was
later joined by his wife Vittoria Bosco. Professor Paul
Bosco continued teaching through the eighties and Professor Vittoria
Bosco through the early nineties. Since those early days
the Italian program has grown to include a teaching staff of 13
to 15, an undergraduate population of 300-400 students, and five
graduate students (MA
in Italian Studies) each semester.
