Opportunities for Italian Studies
Albert Ravarino Italian Studies Travel Scholarship
The Italian section holds a yearly
competition for the Ravarino Scholarship.
Deadline: Friday, February 18, 2005
Eligibility: Students must be undergraduate
or graduate students from Notre Dame. Students must also
be returning to Notre Dame for at least one more year of study.
Stipend: Up to $3,000
Description: Support of summer
research and foreign study in Italy. Grants will be made in amounts
not to exceed $3,000, and will not normally cover all expenses.
Notre Dame graduate and undergraduate students who are planning
to pursue research or a formal program of summer study in Italy
are invited to apply.
Students must have completed
at least one year of Italian language. Coursework will normally
be in Italian; will involve the study of Italian language, literature,
and culture; and must be applicable to a student's degree program
at the University of Notre Dame.
Recommended programs for foreign
study include, but are not limited to: Loyola University in Rome,
Boston University in Padua, UCLA in Pisa, Miami University in
Urbino, Columbia University in Scandiano.
Interested students are encouraged
to consult the materials on Italian foreign study in the Department
of Romance Languages, 343 O'Shaughnessy Hall.
Application: Students are invited
to submit a letter which should include:
1) an explanation of how the proposed
research or foreign study will enhance their degree program at Notre Dame
2) a personal statement indicating
their background, interests, and long-term goals
3) a description of the research
project or the program they intend to follow
4) a budget indicating the costs
involved
5) the names of two references.

The Devers Program
The William and Katherine Devers Program
in Dante Studies at the University of Notre Dame was established in 1995
to support rare book acquisitions in the John A. Zahm Dante collection,
to fund an annual lecture series and visiting professorship in Dante studies,
and to support electronic and print publication of scholarly research in
the field.

Graduate Student Travel-Research Grant
Deadline: None; applications are considered upon submission
Eligibility: Notre Dame graduate students
Stipend: Up to $750
Description: Support for graduate
students engage in research related to Dante Studies broadly conceived
as well as related areas in Italian Studies. Funding for domestic and international
travel to visit library and archival collections, to attend conferences
and seminars, and to deliver academic papers.
Application: Send a single-page statement
of purpose to the Devers Program in Dante Studies, 102 Hesburgh Library,
University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN 46556, or an e-mail message to
devers@nd.edu (no attachments please). Grant will be awarded in the form
of reimbursement for applicable expenses upon presentation of receipts.
