Inventors at Notre Dame

The priority of the Technology Transfer division of the Office of Research is to manage the intellectual property assets of the University of Notre Dame and encourage the development of new products through research in the laboratories.

Faculty, staff, and student inventors interested in patenting a technology being developed are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Notre Dame Intellectual Property Policy.

The patenting process is a partnership that requires the inventors and the patent attorney to work together throughout the process. In the event that a commercial entity is interested in licensing the technology, the Technology Transfer Office will partner with the inventor and patent attorney to work with the interested party(ies).

The general process:

• inventors complete a detailed disclosure and provide it to    the Technology Transfer Office as soon as possible (see    instruction sheet)

• The Technology Transfer Office evaluates the disclosure    deciding whether to protect the invention

• The Technology Transfer Office works with inventor to    develop marketing plan or licensing strategy

• If Notre Dame decides to pursue a utility patent, the    Technology Transfer Office will provide an attorney to    partner with the inventor through the process
