Equipment: Screening and Shared Use

Federally-funded equipment acquisitions costing $5,000 or more are subject to screening procedures to ensure that unnecessary or duplicative items are not purchased. Prior to purchasing major items of equipment, the University expects that screening will be conducted to determine that similar or like equipment is not available on campus for shared use.

Some sponsoring agencies may have special requirements regarding equipment acquisitions. The principal investigator will coordinate efforts with the University's Purchasing Department when special requirements are mandated. In the absence of sponsor guidance, it is suggested that for items of equipment costing in excess of $5,000, inquiry be made to the cognate units and that the inquiry be documented.
