After a rousing kickoff in June, the Renovare
teams late last month converged at the ERP project’s
first quarterly “Renovare Huddle” in
the Notre Dame Monogram Room.

The huddle was, according to program director
Craig Brummell, a time for University leaders to
reaffirm their commitment to the program and for
all team members to gain a broad perspective of
progress made over the last three months.
Several senior University officials, including
John Affleck-Graves, John Sejdinaj and Gordon Wishon
spoke about the importance of team performance
in implementing a program that will change many
of the business processes of the University. Guest
speaker Chuck Lennon, executive director of the
Notre Dame Alumni Association reflected on the
need to maintain a clear vision of desired outcome
and asked Renovare team members to look beyond
self to a higher purpose that is Notre Dame.
“There is no project on campus that is going
impact people (at Notre Dame) more than Renovare,” said
Affleck-Graves, adding that the Renovare team members
were chosen because of their history of commitment
and their detailed knowledge of University processes.
“I know that things are going pretty well,” said
John Sejdinaj in his presentation to the Renovare
team. He said, “People are really bonding;
that takes a lot of respect for each other.”
Teaming
is vital when there’s so much going
on, Brummell said, and then as if to prove
his point, shouted: “What’s going
on, team?” resulting spirited responses
from several team members (see sidebar “What’s
Going On”).
Brummell reported in other efforts, the
Renovare team has been evaluating LiveLink
and Extender solutions and has been managing
system access. Moreover, the Renovare team
has been working with meeting with the
deans of several Notre Dame academic units
to assess IT infrastructure needs for the
new ERP system, and has also made advances
in identifying stakeholders throughout
the University, Brummell said.
Wishon closed the business portion of
the Renovare meeting by reaffirming the
importance of individual performance in
meeting project goals.
Quoting from Augustine’s Laws, a
book by Lockheed Martin Corporation CEO
Norman Augustine, Wishon reminded Renovare
team members that the most successful people
are generally those who “squeeze
from themselves that last bit of personal
performance.” Championships often
are won by a very small margin of extra
effort, Wishon said.
