I have yet to see any problem, however complicated, which, when you looked at it in the right way, did not become still more complicated.

Research Interests

Ethical Theory
The primary focus of my research is contemporary ethical theory. My thesis is concerned with the way in which ethical theories deal, or fail to deal, with the range of evaluative concepts that we employ in many of our moral judgments. I am also very interested in contemporary attempts to revive an Aristotelian approach to ethics and questions concerning methodology in ethical theory.

Political Philosophy
I have interests in both classical and contemporary political philosophy, including the liberal/communitarian debate, theories of ideology, and the relationship between theories of democratic legitimacy and education policy.

Appied Ethics
I am interested in questions of methodology and authority in applied ethics, as well as a range of particular ethical topics, including medical ethics.
