Advising at Notre Dame for Veterinary School

All advising for application to veterinary school is coordinated by Kay Stewart in the Freimann Animal Care Facility located in 400 Galvin Life Science, 219 631-6086. Kay also serves as the Notre Dame Pre Vet Club faculty advisor.

Prerequisites for Veterinary School

There are 27 accredited Schools of Veterinary Medicine in the United States and 4 in Canada. Many roads lead to veterinary school, so major in what you like, but keep in mind the following prerequisite courses. Outlined below are the basic prevet requirements required by most schools.
One year of Calculus (although some may only require one semester)
One year of General Chemistry with labs
One year of General Biology with labs
One year of Organic Chemistry with labs
One year of Physics with labs
One Literature Course (although some may require 2)
1000-1500 hours of direct animal volunteer/internship/work experience (all hours must be logged in a journal)


Some schools require one or more of the following additional classes:
Biochemistry Social or Behavioral Science
Genetics or Animal Genetics Physiology
Statistics Microbiology
Animal Science (Animal nutrition) Speech
Mammalian Embryology or Developmental Biology Cell Biology
Nutrition

Notre Dame Pre Vet Club

The Pre Vet Club is very active at Notre Dame with events at least twice a month. Students visit zoos, clinics, go horseback riding and perform service work. The club advisor is Kay Stewart.

Conference, Work, Internships, Volunteer Opportunities in Veterinary Medicine

Adventures in Veterinary Medicine This unique 1-2 week program is sponsored by Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and is open to anyone interested in veterinary medicine. The program includes biotechnology, ethics and values, equine sports medicine, wildlife medicine, and international veterinary medicine. Students are exposed to equine sports medicine, biotechnology, wildlife medicine, and international veterinary medicine.
