Fr. James K. Foster is a 1977 graduate of the University
of Notre Dame and a 1981 graduate of the University of Illinois
Medical School. After earning his medical degree, he completed
a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Infectious
Diseases at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, was board
certified in both, and entered private medical practice
in the western suburbs of Chicago. In 1989, he entered the
Congregation of Holy Cross, earned a master of divinity
in 1994 and was ordained in 1995. After ordination, he completed
a fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics at the MacLean Center
for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago.
He returned to Notre Dame in the fall of 1997 and presently
teaches an Introduction to Clinical Ethics seminar to students
interested in health care. He is a member
of the National Association of Advisors to the Health Professions
and sits on the Ethics Committee and Institutional Review
Board of Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Inc. in South
Bend, Indiana. He is also chaplain of the Notre Dame Glee
Club, and lives in residence in Knott Hall on the campus
at Notre Dame.

Kathleen J.S. Kolberg, Ph.D.

Kathleen Kolberg is a developmental biologist and advisor who joined the Science Preprofessional program in 2004. She has taught in the Department of Psychology since 1994, teaching courses of interest to prehealth students such as Stress Medicine and Management, Behavioral Pediatrics, and Psychology and Medicine. She worked in advising at the Arts and Letters Office of Undergraduate Studies, Arts and Letters Preprofessional program from 2001 to 2004. She is also a member of National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions
Dr. Kolberg received her PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Notre Dame in 1989. Her research interests are developmental psychobiology,
developmental toxicology, stress and clinical outcomes, and how the hospital
environment affects patients, families and staff. She currently serves on the
Planning Committee for the Physical and Developmental Environment of the High
Risk Infant Conference, the Consensus Committee to Establish Recommended Standards for Newborn ICU Design, the Newborn Developmental Care Committee of
the Indiana Perinatal Association and the March of Dimes Northern Indiana
Division Board of Directors. Dr. Kolberg also works with the Newborn Intensive
Care Unit at Memorial Hospital on research and education projects such as
developing a pain assessment tool for NICU infants and using appreciative
inquiry to improve family centered care in the NICU. She has published 28 works
ranging from book chapters to journal articles to popular media. She is also an
advisor to Notre Dame Campus Girl Scouts, HUGS and Medical Explorers and coach
of South Bend Community Schools FIRST Robotics teams.
