Red Cross Lifeguarding Training Course

Lifeguard Training ( Full course)
The Lifeguarding Class will be held Wednesdays beginning September19 from 7:00pm - 10:00 pm. Room 110 and the pool at the Rockne Memorial.
Cost: $100.00
Registration will be through RecSports starting on Thursday Aug. 28 at 7:30 am.

For the Students in Physical Education:
After signing up with RecSports, you will need to notify the Physical Education Department in order to receive credit for this course in Physical Education, The Lifeguarding course will count for the full semester. The Lifeguard Review course will count for one unit of activity. Remember that you need to complete the requirement for Contemporary Topics. Please call the PE office at 631-6222

What You Will Learn
American Red Cross training makes learning fun and easy. Through classroom learning and hands-on practice, you'll learn:
- Surveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries
- Rescue skills - in the water and on land
- First aid training and professional rescuer CPR - to help you prepare for any emergency
- Professional lifeguard responsibilities like interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons
Purpose
To teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.
Prerequisites:
- Minimum age of 15.
- Swim 300 yards continuously.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Lerning Objectives
- Understand the value of behaving in a professional manner.
- Learn how to identify behaviors of a swimmer, distressed swimmer and an active or passive drowning victim.
- Understand the components of an emergency action plan and how to activate it.
- Understand the general procedures for an emergency occurring in the water or on land.
- Demonstrate how to perform equipment-based rescues.
- Learn how to provide first aid and how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies.
- Learn how to recognize and care for possible head, neck or back injuries.
Requirements
- Attend all class sessions.
- Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
- Demonstrate competency in the three final skill scenarios.
- Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the three sections of the final written exam
Please note that the cost of the course includes the text, a pocket resuscitation
mask, and course materials for Lifeguarding, First Aid, AED,
and Emergency Oxygen Administration.
