Uganda Initiatives

Donor Information

About 60% of the money raised for St. Jude's over the last several years has come from hall Mass collections and student donations, and about 40% has come through the fundraising efforts of the student volunteers who went to Uganda. In each case, they undertook those projects on their own initiative without any obligation to do so. The student placement has been partially supported by a grant from the Indiana Province of the Congregation of Holy Cross and by a yearly contribution from the Center for Social Concerns at Notre Dame.

Our efforts to fund our summer volunteers was helped immeasurably by a $150,000 leadership grant from Notre Dame alumnus John C. Fogarty, class of '49. As a result, interest from the Fogarty Endowment now supports most of the placement costs, which requires a substantial amount each year for airfare, room and board, visas, shots, educational training, and living stipend. In addition Mr. Fogarty donated $50,000 more in January 2009 to fund Michael Dewan's medical project (See "Sorin Medical Corps" page).

We are most grateful to Mr. Fogarty and all of those who have supported these Uganda initiatives. Aside from Mr. Fogarty's gifts, more than half of the money that has been raised for our projects has come from football game Mass collections, alumni, parent, and student contributions. Blessings to all of you!
