If you didn't know about Notre Dame's rich history of football, you in all likelihood picked your college by having your pet monkey throw darts at the U.S. News and World Report's top colleges. Ever since the time of Knute Rockne, football has been a Notre Dame institution. Your greatest memories will occur during those 6 or 7 Saturdays every fall when campus comes alive for Notre Dame's greatest tradition.
Stats to Know:
- 11 National Championships
- 7 Heisman Trophy Winners
- "Win One for the Gipper" was a speech given by Rockne to his players before a game against heavily favored Army (the Irish won, and yes, Army used to be - good). Click here to learn about the legend of George Gipp.
- We have too much intelligence, pride, and tradition to associate ourselves with any conference.
- Our biggest and most hated rival is USC (I won't even use those three letters in any essays).
- Our current coach is Brian Kelly.
- "Rudy" is the single greatest movie ever made about sports and you will cry every time you watch it (better than Angels in the Outfield).
- Pep rallies are hosted every Friday evening before home games.
- Our mascot is the Fighting Irish (again, if you didn't know this, just re-read the bit about the pet monkey above).
- We play in Notre Dame Stadium which houses about 80,000 fans.
- "Play Like a Champion Today" is a sign posted on the stairway leading to the tunnel that the players hit before making their gameday entrance.
- This year's leprechaun is none other than the former O'Neill Hall President Dave Zimmer.
