Computer FAQ
Should I bring a computer to Notre Dame?
It would be very helpful to you to bring a computer to Notre Dame, although it
is not an admission requirement. As of 2005 we have a 98% connection rate in the
residence halls.
What kind of computer should I bring?
You may bring any type you prefer, an Apple, Windows, or Unix machine.
Which type of computer is better for me to bring, a laptop or desktop?
This is a matter of preference. However, the dorm rooms and many other places around
campus now have wireless internet available. These options may be attractive to someone
who prefers to work away from their room. Of course, there is also limited space in residence
halls for a desktop computer making a laptop more convenient. If you do bring a desktop, try
to get a flatscreen monitor so that you have enough room on your table.
What do I need to connect to the network?
You can either connect with an RJ-45 cable or go wireless. Most computers these days come
with wireless cards so you should be set. If you prefer a wired connection, you will need
an RJ-45 cable and an Ethernet card. An RJ-45 cable is a specialized
cable used to connect to the network. You don't have to purchase the RJ-45 cable
before you come to campus. If you're not sure what to look for you may purchase one from
the Solutions Center when you arrive. An Ethernet card is a card which allows a computer
to connect to a network. Again, 99% of computers come with an Ethernet card.
Can I purchase software on campus?
Yes! As a matter of fact, you may want to do this when you arrive. Notre Dame has an
agreement with Microsoft in which students can purchase many Microsoft titles at
reduced prices. Microsoft Office and many other software titles are available from the
Solutions Center, Notre Dame's computer store conveniently located on campus.
Can I purchase hardware on campus?
Yes! You can purchase Ethernet Cables (RJ-45), Ethernet Cards, Computers, and many other
accessories from the
Solutions Center.
What do I need to know about connecting to the network at Notre Dame?
Everything you need to know about connecting to the network at Notre Dame can be found
at at the
Office of Information Technologies website.
What is the most important thing I should do with my computer before I come to campus?
For those with Windows machines, make sure you have all the latest critical updates
installed. In addition, ensure that you have your Windows XP firewall turned on and
if you have anti-virus software, make sure that it is up to date.
What if I can't bring a computer?
That's okay! Notre Dame has multiple computer clusters on campus open various
hours of the day to suit your computing needs.
Do I need a printer?
That decision is up to you but it would probably be only a burden. O'Neill has a printer
that you can send files to downstairs in the lobby. If you work mostly in your room, a printer
could be useful. However, there are printers available both in O'Neill and in the computer
clusters across campus. Also remember, there is limited space in the residence hall rooms.
