IMPORTANT NOTE:
New Study Abroad Pricing Policy Effective Fall 2007
Changes Should Allow More Students a Chance to Study Abroad
In 1964, 49 pioneers embarked for a year in Notre Dames program at Innsbruck, Austria. Programs in France and Japan soon followed, and today the university offers over 40 programs in more than 20 countries world-wide. Growth has accelerated tremendously in the past ten years, so that today international study constitutes a key feature of the undergraduate experience. In 2003-04, the last year for which we have national statistics, Notre Dame's rate of undergraduate participation was 53%.
The University is proud of its stellar reputation in international studies, and pleased to offer a level of support for students abroad that is genuinely unique among our peers. Not only does the Office of International Studies work closely with all four undergraduate colleges to ensure that curriculum taught off-campus will carry over to ND graduation, we also provide airfare to sites abroad--a benefit unknown to students in virtually all our peer institutions. Notre Dame's Financial Aid office also works to respond to the additional financial needs incurred in study abroad.
Given the continued high demand for study abroad and the university's commitment to internationalization, we seek to make this opportunity available to a larger percentage of applicants. At the same time, we must overcome the material challenges in a manner both sustainable and suitable to Notre Dame's traditions. In order to meet this challenge, the University will change its pricing for international study, effective Fall 2007. Beginning with the 2007-08 academic year, certain changes will impact students who enroll in a study abroad program, namely:
• All students in a semester or year-long program approved by ND for overseas study will receive round-trip airfare from a gateway city in the United States
• Students will continue to receive Notre Dame credit and grades for courses taken abroad
• All students will be charged an amount equivalent to Notre Dame tuition, room, board and on-campus fees, plus an international studies fee of $600 for any ND approved program. This covers:
- Notre Dame tuition
- Room and partial board, specific to site
- Some curricular field trips
- Round-trip travel. Notre Dame will cover up to the lowest possible group fare, from gateway cities.
- Exception: Washington DC program. No $600 fee, no airfare included.
- Students may incur other expenses, such as passport and visa fees, International Student ID card
