2010 SUMMER PROGRAMS ABROAD
INFORMATION SESSION
Monday, December 7, 2009, at 5:00 p.m., in 118 DeBartolo
Location
Rome is a living museum, a unique environment to understand the ups and downs in the history of humankind. Over three million people do their daily business surrounded by 2,500 years of history – including legendary ruins, architecture, and art. The capital of Italy, Rome is the country's political center and a major religious center, being the host to the Vatican – an independent state within Rome.
Program of Study
Students will take two 3-credit courses during the six-week program, June 3-July 16, 2010. Carroll William Westfall, University of Notre Dame Frank Montana Professor of Architecture, offers this unique opportunity for non-architecture students to study Seeing Power in Rome: Exploring the Pagan, Christian, and Modern City, an interdisciplinary course that brings together art history, religious and political history, and political theory, allowing each to provide insight into the other two.

Students will also enroll in a History course, Ancient Rome: History and Myth, taught in English by an Italian professor. Students will receive Notre Dame credit for these courses and they will count towards their GPA. There is no language requirement for this program.
This program in Rome is offered for Summer 2010 only. It is possible that a program will be offered in Rome in subsequent summers. Future programs will likely differ in timing and courses offered. We must have 10 students confirm participation in this program to offer it during Summer 2010.
Eligibility for the Program
Applicants must be full-time students at the University of Notre Dame or St. Mary’s College, with a suggested average GPA of 2.75. Study of Italian is not required. February 19, 2010, is the application deadline. Students must apply via the Office of International Studies online application. The application system opened on November 16, 2009.
