ROME-ICCS
THE INTERCOLLEGIATE CENTER FOR CLASSICAL STUDIES
A select number of Notre Dame students can participate for one semester in the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies, a consortium of 90 colleges and universities under the management of Duke University. ICCS website link: http://studyabroad.duke.edu/home/Programs/Semester/ICCS_Rome
The ICCS provides students with an opportunity in Rome to study ancient history and archaeology, Latin and Greek language and literature, and art history. Applicants must be at least sophomores majoring in classics, classical history or archaeology, or must be art history majors with a strong classical background. Proficiency in Italian language is not required.
A major part of the academic work at ICCS consists of a required comprehensive and integrated two-part course titled The Ancient City, which deals with Roman archaeology and topography, social and urban history of Rome, and Roman civilization. The Ancient City course presupposes a solid knowledge of Roman history. Site visits and explorations, museum tours, lectures, and wide-ranging trips complete the course. Other academic offerings include Intermediate and Advanced Latin and Greek, Renaissance and Baroque Art History, and Elementary Italian. Click here for a link to course information.
Participants are chosen by members of the Notre Dame Classics Department, and acceptance into the Rome-ICCS Program is highly selective.
The Center is located on one of the main streets of the Janiculum in the heart of Rome. The building serves as classroom, office and meeting space, dormitory, and refectory. A substantial library is also on site, and there is a pleasant garden outside the building. The neighborhood is residential, with apartment buildings, shops and cafes. The ICCS is linked to the center of Rome and to the metropolitan area by an excellent system of public transportation. The Rome train station and airports make Rome a ready gateway for travel throughout Italy and beyond.
