Japanese tea ceremonyReligious Life

There are several chapels and a Catholic church located in the Nanzan educational complex, which includes the high school and junior college, as well as the University. English-speaking men and women are readily available for consultation and counseling at the Logos Center, the Campus Ministry Office of Nanzan University.

Transportation and Travel

The program furnishes round-trip air transportation between a west coast city and the program site. Costs for baggage in excess of limits allowed for international flights must be paid by the individual. Travel in Nagoya is by bus or subway. Students may not rent or own cars unless accompanying parents or relatives visiting Japan. Students may not buy motorbikes.

Japanese RestaurantHousing and Meals

The Center for Japanese Studies coordinates a homestay program for Notre Dame students. Students live with Japanese families and take most meals with them.  The University of Notre Dame provides a monthly allowance to help defray food and commuting costs.

Cultural and Recreational Opportunities

Students are invited to join Japanese student clubs which focus on a great variety of activities, such as drama, martial arts and sports. The University opened a new physical education complex on the northwest corner of the campus in 1987. This facility contains an indoor swimming pool, running track and basketball and racquetball courts. Japanese templeOutdoors, students will find tennis courts, a baseball diamond, and track, field and golf practice areas.

Nagoya boasts the Tokugawa Art Museum, built on the site of the ancient mansion of the Tokugawa family, who nominally ruled Japan for the 250 years preceding the Meiji Restoration. The musuem contains some 7,000 works of art, historical relics and family heirlooms. The Center for Japanese Studies offers students opportunities to attend exhibitions and performances of Japanese visual and dramatic arts. During vacation periods, students are encouraged to visit Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara and other important Japanese historical sites. Travel throughout Japan and other Asian countries can be planned during the longer Christmas and spring vacations.
