Volunteering is another important means by which students can integrate themselves into British society in a positive and meaningful way while they are in London. It is an excellent way of giving back to the local community to which students belong during their time in the London Program. It is also a valuable source of work experience.
London provides many volunteering opportunities that relate directly to students’ own personal interests. For example, students interested in environmentalism have the opportunity to volunteer at the London Wildlife Trust. Moreover, through prior arrangement with the appropriate department, this work experience may be supplemented by academic work and then taken for variable credit.
Over the years, the London Program has developed working relationships with a number of volunteer organizations, including the Westminster Volunteer Bureau, St. Mary of the Angels Primary School, the Soup Kitchen of the American Church in London, Habitat for Humanity, and Age Concern. These volunteering opportunities are advertised to students on their arrival in London by the rectors in the London Program. For further details, please contact the rector, Richard Whaite.
